Known for including a wide range of animals in his campaigns (we’ve had skateboarding peacocks and Harry Styles with his chickens) Alessandro Michele‘s Gucci SS20 animal of choice is a horse. Photographed by acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos, things start to make sense when you remember the filmmaker’s brilliant 2015 film The Lobster, where single people unable to find a life partner are transformed for eternity into their favourite animal.
Within Gucci’s imagery, horses can be seen on airplanes, in traffic jams, beaches and even at LA’s legendary Chateau Marmont.
Think back to the house’s SS20 and it’s underlying theme: a critique of power as a boundary of individuality within society. Within this meaning, the horse takes on an almost mythological presence, guiding individuals towards a new freedom.
